ONLY ONE ARTIST PER STUDENT...

ONLY ONE STUDENT PER ARTIST...

I repeat, no two students may choose the same artist...

Do NOT select Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Picasso, Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, Van Gogh, or Duchamp... I have seen hundreds of projects on these artists. Let's choose someone more contemporary.
Picture
I think he is copying... but it is still pretty awesome!

The idea is that you produce a piece of art you care about, please create something that is going to allow you to have a greater understanding of what your artist was trying to accomplish, say, express, prove, or create. Enjoy drawing inspiration from someone, it can take you places you have never been...

To Sculpt, or not to Sculpt... that is the question.
Ever wondered what it would be like to live in someone else's shoes?
Id like you to create a sculpture in masking tape, and only masking tape.

The human form leaves much to the imagination as to how to reduce all we see into simple shapes created with masking tape. To create an entire form is a massive undertaking however... these body sculptures took the artists months to create... choose your subject wisely.

Emotive Self-portraiture

Artists have used portraiture for a variety of purposes throughout history.

Artists have used self-portraits for centuries to practice their technique and exalt their status to the world. The human form does not alone convey identity. What expression, posture, clothing, background, colors, texture, and style best express the real you? Might those answers be different at any given time, and depending on when you lived?

Cut up your image and work like a cubist. Collage different pictures that represent you into the background. Draw into your face and add details- or doodles. Scratch and scrape your portrait to create angst and anger. You choose. Which side of your personality do you want to convey to the world- today?

For this assignment, you need to look at the world of self-portraiture- from the old masters, such as Van Gogh, all the way to more current artists, such as Lucien Freud. Determine what style of portraiture interests you (don't forget to look at other cultures) and decide what you want to say about yourself through your depiction.

Once you have decided on a style that is appropriate, fill out the Curriculum outcome sheet and plan your painting. See me for a sheet and further explanation.

Bowl and Paper Due Oct 19

Picture
Medium: Pencil

Create a drawing in pencil of a bowl and paper. Practice elliptical perspective, 2 point perspective and chiaroscuro.

Put the bowl on the paper, keep the paper at an angle.

Book In Perspective Due Oct 11

Picture
Book in Perspective
To be completed in your ARW...

Medium: Pencil

Draw a book(s) using two point perspective concepts. Your vanishing points must not be on the page. Instead, imagine them somewhere off on either side of your page. The drawing must include an environment!

Use shading throughout the page and aim for at least 10 different values.

Tips for a better drawing and to improve your grade:
Place the book at an even angle and view it from just below your eye level.

Include a background and light the book with a single light source.

The perspective on drawing to the left seems a bit extreme since the vanishing points are nearly on the page.

Note that both drawings have a good amount of shading.

Make the book occupy a large portion of your page.

Don't attempt lettering unless you are really sure of how to do it.

Make sure your vanishing points are not too close.

This is an example, on the right, of a book drawing

with the vanishing points drawn too close.

Due Oct 17th

Picture
Color and Black and White Photos

Medium: Colored Pencils, Black and white photo and glue stick

Choose a black and white image that has had some elements removed by you and replace those missing parts with drawn colored pencil in the likeness of the original image. Your use of colour will be up to you, but try to keep it realistic and in a similar value to the black and white image.
At least 50% must be drawn.

Picture
This photo had a "path" cut from it, where the artist filled in the missing picture in the path with coloured pencil drawings that matched up with the original photo from her childhood.
