PRESENTATIONS...
Skills and know-how

First I would like you to watch this very short video of a presentation by a 12 year-old.
Thomas Suarez: A 12-year-old app developer
Secondly, I would like you to watch a second short video...
Birke Baehr: What's wrong with our food system
After watching both videos, please write notes about the strengths you noticed that both young presenters demonstrated... We will then pair up and share what we noticed. A class discussion will follow.
Do you think you will be able to use these strengths the next time you present?

Tracing Self Portrait...

For this self Portrait you will be required to use a mirror, acetate, and a marker to draw yourself...
Begin by placing a piece of acetate (clear plastic "paper")on top of one of our mirrors. Students trace their face (different expressions) onto the acetate with a fine point permanent marker. When finished, paint a simplified version of your portrait with acrylic paint on the opposite side of the acetate.

Face Card Self Portrait...

Students are to create face cards that incorporate a unique self-portrait (how the student "thinks" that they look), while maintaining the look of a traditional face card. Card has to have a point of symmetry - to be able to be flipped seamlessly…You also must demonstrate an awareness and attention to playing card details, such as numbering the card, displaying their chosen suite (hearts, clubs, spades, diamonds, or your own suite) and incorporating a symbol of an particular interest or hobby that they have (horses, video games, sporting equipment, ect...) into their card.
Materials: Heavy drawing paper, pencils, permanent markers, rulers, temper paint or acrylic - coloured pencils or markers could be used, it is up to the student.

What you need:
ie You can also make very nice simple shaped sculptures with some wire of 1.5 to 2 mm thick and newspapers. It can bare wire, but with plastic around it can be used as well. It is actually sculpt without clay.
Take two pieces of wire eg about 50 cm long and turn into the first one down the center and tighten the wire together under this round. That is the head.
The second thread turn around the first wire and then down to the body. Again turn the wires together. You get a figure as you see in the picture opposite. Put the parts move some fixed with tape. Then you make a figure. Such as a male lying to read as shown in the pictures on this page. Are you happy with form then go head and trunk fill with newspapers and still stick with the tape. If you've done that, you are going the arms and legs all tightly wrap strips newspapers. This will make the arms and legs make it look thicker. More like a male (or female) If you have done this you have all the papers with adhesive bonding. This is necessary because the newspaper is going to work with paint and masking tape not. then all parts completely black paints. There should not be a white piece of tape to see more. Then the gold or bronze paint it coming. This should happen only very slightly. The brush must make a little wet with paint and then paint again in part wipe on an old newspaper. Still very light the leftovers from the statue to sweep. Make sure there is a lot to see black. Thus, it becomes like a really old picture of gold or bronze.

1. open up a new tab.
2. Google "Windows Movie Maker".
3. Install Program following instructions provided by your teacher.

While I am away... I'd like you to take some ACTION!

Click on the Grizzly bear to learn more about what is ailing our Bears.
Click on the bears to watch an informative film on Grizzly Bears and Trains.
After you have completed watching the two short videos about Grizzly Bears, write a letter that illustrates either a solution to the problem, or a cry for something to be done by our Government to address the threats to the Grizzlies of Alberta.
I believe that you will find that Bears are worth protecting and will take a moment from your busy morning to contribute to conservation efforts to save our Bears.
Your teacher will give you a postcard to write a letter to the Premier of Alberta, Alison Redford. With enough support, the issue of Grizzly Bear habitat will be addressed, and bears will once again thrive... but without letters informing the Premier of how the people (you) of Alberta feel about our threatened Grizzlies, their lives will continue to be lost due to habitat reduction, train tracks, highways, poaching, and other threats to their lives and health of our ecosystem.
Please address your postcard to:
Premier of Alberta

Whole Body Collage

A self portrait doesn't have to only be your face; you can use your torso, or your whole body. Lay out a piece of paper, and have someone trace your shape with a pencil. Lay out, or assume an action pose, making sure all your limbs are touching the paper. Afterwards the lines are traced out, fill in the shape of your body with pictures that you feel best represent you. Fill in the entire shape or leave strategic patches of white space to represent important parts of your personality, such as a heart-shaped space in your chest, or spaces for your eyes. Add any items that are important to you or that you think represent you, being mature about content and using appropriate images. Remember to include some words that you feel represent you. Pieces of Yourself
Some people use self-portrait collages to describe aspects of their personality or beliefs by combining actual pictures of themselves with cutouts from construction paper, newspapers and magazines. For example, a kid aspiring to be in the NBA might cut off the head and hands of a photo of himself and replace the appendages with pictures or cutouts of basketballs. A person engaged in devout spiritual practice might replace her face with a picture or cutout of hands clasped in prayer.
